Don Tapscott on 2017 IEBE Guangzhou: blockchain may replace google

27th March Guangzhou-On the 2017 Guangzhou IEBE (International E-Business Expo)”Digital Economy Innovation Ecology”, Don Tapscott, “the father of digital economy” and author of “Blockchain Revolution” says: “Blockchain will be the most influential black technology in the next few decades” as reported by Guangzhou Daily  , the most influential media in Southern China.
Don Tapscott is well known for his insights into digital world. In September 2016, he published the new book “Blockchain Revolution”, which offers panoramic depiction of the blockchain theory and application, detailing how the decentralized technology could disrupt the existing business model at the bottom layer. Back in 1994, his “Digital Economy” was the first book that described the virtual economy systematically.

In 2016, all major players in the financial sectors and the Internet sectors have begun actively engaged in blockchain implementation. However in addition to the financial services industry, POC applications in other sectors are still in the experimental stage. The industry believes that in 2017 there may be a wave of blockchain apps on the horizon.

As the keynote speaker, Don Tapscott focused on the use of blockchain in future life and business applications, including social collaboration, digital copyrights protection, cross-border remittances, energy and other areas will undergo profound changes. He believes that

“In the future, the blockchain technology will lead to a new technological innovation and industrial change.”

When asked by a reporter: Why Amazon and other Silicon Valley companies do not talk about blockchain technology, but focus on cloud computing? “, Don answered:

“They do not like the existence of blockchain because Blockchain can destroy their business models. For example, if blockchain is integrated into a social platform, users can manage their own ID. Facebook will no longer have the advantage to manage user’s ID. We used to get valuable information through Google, but the emergence of blockchain is likely to replace Google’s presence. “

However, the idea of blockchain technology is currently being suppressed by the tightening regulation of Bitcoin in China. There is no sign of Since the withdrawal suspension in February, the most recent update from major Chinese bitcoin exchanges like BTCC is that a new KYC/AML system is online and all users are required to go through the process again. Some users complained on 8btc forum that there are too much hassle to withdraw CNY from OKCoin.

    What?! Who is upvoting this?

“We used to get valuable information through Google, but the emergence of blockchain is likely to replace Google’s presence. “

That’s BS on a level I can’t even grasp, wether it comes from Don Tapscott or not!

Why? It is actually true. Ask someone like juan benett if he thinks how possible it is building a decentralized open Index of the open web.

It is possible. But no one in the crypto /web3 space likes to talk that offensive because you don’t want to be offensive to google 🙂

But In principle it is right. The value of the people can be captures and redistributed through blockchains.

At the moment google crawles the web and then sells what it makes out of it afterwards.

And the tricky part is exactly “what it makes out of it” where they spend all there time tweaking/fine-tuning the structure and algorithms to keep spammers etc in check. Google can exist/run ON the blockchain but the blockchain will not replace Google, those are 2 totally different things.

Yeah, this seems a bit of a stretch.

It seems way more likely that google will just adopt blockchain tech. Any startup trying to gain SE market share will have to compete with a $0.5T behemoth who could simply buy them all out or build a better tech

    Juan Benett?
is talking about an emergence with products and companies. That’s also where the money is. There are so many applications for having the web set up and this is primarily all a cause from our advancement in computers.

I am missing how blockchain and google compete in any capacity…

a more realistic statement would be that Google will repalce some of it’s internal DBs with Blockchains.

Do you have a link? IPFS doesn’t use a blockchain, and IPFS doesn’t index.

Right? Google is full of smart people. They won’t miss out on the opportunity.

If you add all consumer devices in the world to a public global blockchain, would they have more computing power than all google data centers today?

You know there might be a reason why google so astronimically invests in quantum computing and AI :))

can you elaborate on “what makes out of it” ?

Again all i’m saying that it is technically possible to run a service like gogole and even better powered by blockchain and other merkle tree(IPFS etc..) technologies.

Why do you think all is set in stone? Google and Facebook and all the rest of the monopolies are actually quite vulnerable because the majority on their income model is ad based. Now look what brendan eich is doing with his BAT Token and Brave browser.

Ad is a Paradigm. Ad driven revenue was a Paradigm. Paradigms can shift. And Blockchain and other distributed Technologies make that possible.

It is a good future with more user empowerment.

If you like to read more on the subject I highly recommend to you the book: who owns the future by jaron Lanier.

I understand the significance, for sure. Google has patents on many things, including search algorithms. They won’t let their intellectual property go open source overnight, or for free. They will have to integrate it onto open source software in a way they can monetize. Undoubtedly, they are hot on it.

What I mean with “what makes out of it” is Google gathering/indexing all data it can find and filter/categorise/store/… it so it becomes available & usable for us mortals.

Sure blockchain will have an impact and I don’t know how/what/when exactly but I HATE articles that spout absolute crap as-if a technology like BC can simply wipe Google out. Nobody and I really mean NOBODY has been able, or even come close to Google Search, and it is not like nobody has been trying … blockchain doesn’t change anything in that respect. And Google has some of the smartest people in the world working for them … you think they won’t grasp the new opportunities that blockchain will provide? That quote is just sensational BS.

Google knows very well blockchain is coming … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PdO7zVqOwc

    Thanks for the book tip.

I would agree with you that the distributed cloud will make computing far more efficient, what I’m not seeing is how that makes them a competitor? Google uses its own cloud infrastructure to manage its applications (including search), if they could plug into a global distributed cloud to cut costs I don’t see why they wouldn’t do so. What I was saying is I don’t believe blockchain is going to encroach on Google’s core business (ads).

  • AndreasS2501

you both don’t seem to see the significance. Ir is not about “mart” it is about values, and if you have the ability to change within an organisation.

Or lets say you don’t understand what “blockchain” means.

To make it simple lets say there are actually 2 meanings of blockchain:

a tool to achieve hyper efficiency to get rid of man more jobs that are today manual labour. A tool to make organisations more efficient to make more profit
a tool to rebuild social institutions and thus society from the ground up. Using transparency and Collaboration over monopolies and scarcity. Changing values of people and with it society, a paradigm shift in social, economical and political behaviour.

Google and other web 2.0 Players build large monopolies to exist and maximise profit. So if the blockchain is a tool to open up, connect people. Apply Open source thinking to all structures of society while building trust ( through reputation networks) . Then this is simply a tool which is the anti-thesis to the business and economical models of most of todays tech companies 🙂

Of course you can do a “little” blockchain here and there and hyperledger and walmart or example are doing things like other big players.
But the exponential change appears when you open up data and everything else. Which is again I don’t see google or anyone of the big players are doing. For them its still quarterly reports with rising profits, that is their religion and it must be growing.

But it absoluteley is, have you seen brendan eich (inventor javascript) project brave?

he is now planing a Token for Attention – BAT , based on ethereum
I replied to that also here:

I’m totally with you concerning the BS stuff. At some point in time a term becomes almost meaningless because it is used by so many people to mean somany different things.

I have written about it here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/61y84i/don_tapscott_on_2017_iebe_guangzhou_blockchain/dfizsm2/

To make it simple lets say there are actually 2 meanings of blockchain:

I’m unsure in which camp taspcott sits. Probably somewhere in between, as the world isn’t pure black/white 🙂

That’s a good point, I’d probably argue that Brave isn’t necessarily a blockchain app but more of a regular app with a blockchain token. BUT at the same time I see your point as to where these businesses can encroach.
