Bitmain Joined Hands with Another Taiwanese Chip Maker to Get 10,000 Memory Chips Per Month
The Chinese cryptocurrency mining hardware manufacturer Bitmain has expanded its cooperation with Taiwanese chip maker giants. TSMC, the world’s largest chip foundry is profiting heftily from selling ASIC chips to Bitmain. Meanwhile, Powerchip Technology Corp., a contract semiconductor manufacturer, has also becomes a strategic cooperative partner of Bitmain, according to Taiwan local media United Daily News.
AP Memory, a subsidiary company of Powerchip will provide Bitmain all the memory chips they need for their cryptocurrency miner manufacture, as well as for developing their AI business.
Bitmain has reached agreement with Powerchip that, from this July, AP Memory will be the exclusive supplier of Bitmain’s memory order and all the memory chips will be manufactured by Powerchip.
Some industrial insiders believe that, as memory chip is a core component of artificial intelligence, Bitmain’s cooperation with the Powerchip is in order to get ample supply of memory and capture highland in the AI boom.
Frank Huang, founder of Powerchip, has confirmed this cooperation, he indicated that, Powerchip will provide 10,000 specialty DRAM per month to Bitmain in order to fit their demand for releasing the Ethereum ASIC Miner F3. The memory chips use for AI are still confidential.
It was also reported that, Ketuan Zhan, co-founder of Bitmain, is planning to sign an official strategic cooperation agreement with Powerchip in the near future. This is another remarkable initiatives for Bitmain to cooperate with Taiwanese chip manufacturer giant after they started to order bitcoin miner chips from TSMC three years ago.
Huang also emphasized that cryptocurrency craze is only the tip of an iceberg in AI applications. There will be more AI product applications In the future. As the 5G mobile communications business grows, the demand for specialty DRAM will also increases.
In fact, Bitmain eyed AI from 2015 and they have released its AI brand “SOPHON” in last December. The SOPHON BM1680 TPU is also the ASIC chip to enter AI market in mainland China.
All the initiatives made by Bitmain shows the cryptocurrency mining hardware giant has plans to carve an entry into the artificial intelligence sector.
